D’après le cédant, le tableau a été donné par le roi du Portugal à Don Rodriguez de Rivadeneyra, son grand-oncle. Le tableau est dans la famille depuis 66 ans. Le musée du Louvre en aurait fait l’acquisition si ce n’était un sujet religieux.
