Max Pollak dit pouvoir prouver la provenance du tableau jusqu’à son origine et détenir la gravure du tableau. En France, le ministre des Beaux-Arts et le Musée du Louvre ont déclaré être prêt à accepter le tableau en don à fin d’exposition au Louvre parmi les œuvres de Poussin. Mais en ce temps Pollak en demandait 200.000 frs ce qui ne permit pas de faire aboutir la transaction.
