Les dessins de Philippe Van Brée sont devenus très rares suite à l’incendie en 1861 du Théâtre des Nouveautés qui détruisit quasi toutes les études de l’artiste. Quelques-uns des dessins ici offerts en vente ont servi d’étude aux tableaux La jeunesse de Sixte Quint (inv. 202) et Procession dans l’église Saint-Pierre de Rome (inv. 201 ?) appartenant au Musée.
