Dans sa dépêche datée 27 mai 1878, le ministre Delcour écrit : « L’œuvre du plus grand de nos peintres ne présenterait plus de lacune dans les collections de l’Etat, si l’on parvenait à y ajouter une chasse, un paysage, compositions dont il a produit de si beaux modèles. Je ne puis qu’engager la commission à s’efforcer de combler cette lacune » (pièce n° 3).
